Natural Remedies

The following are some common ingredients you can use for a variety of health benefits. Before you reject this claim just check it out for your self.

Turmeric is one of nature's most powerful healers. The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. Tumeric has been used for over 2500 years in India, where it was most likely first used as a dye. The medicinal properties of this spice have been slowly revealing themselves over the centuries. Long known for its anti-inflammatory properties, recent research has revealed that turmeric is a natural wonder, proving beneficial in the treatment of many different health conditions from cancer to Alzheimer's disease. Here are 20 reasons to add turmeric to your diet: 1. It is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent, useful in disinfecting cuts and burns. 2. When combined with cauliflower, it has shown to prevent prostate cancer and stop the growth of existing prostate cancer. 3. Prevented breast cancer from spreading to the lungs in mice. 4. May prevent melanoma and cause existing melanoma cells to commit suicide. 5. Reduces the risk of childhood leukemia. 6. Is a natural liver detoxifier. 7. May prevent and slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease by removing amyloyd plaque buildup in the brain. 8. May prevent metastases from occurring in many different forms of cancer. 9. It is a potent natural anti-inflammatory that works as well as many anti-inflammatory drugs but without the side effects. 10. Has shown promise in slowing the progression of multiple sclerosis in mice. 11. Is a natural painkiller and cox-2 inhibitor. 12. May aid in fat metabolism and help in weight management. 13. Has long been used in Chinese medicine as a treatment for depression. 14. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, it is a natural treatment for arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. 15. Boosts the effects of chemo drug paclitaxel and reduces its side effects. 16. Promising studies are underway on the effects of turmeric on pancreatic cancer. 17. Studies are ongoing in the positive effects of turmeric on multiple myeloma. 18. Has been shown to stop the growth of new blood vessels in tumors. 19. Speeds up wound healing and assists in remodeling of damaged skin. 20. May help in the treatment of psoriasis and other inflammatory skin conditions. Turmeric can be taken in powder or pill form. It is available in pill form in most health food stores, usually in 250-500mg capsules. Once you start using turmeric on a regular basis, it's fun to find new ways to use it in recipes. My favorite way to use it is to add a pinch of it to egg salad. It adds a nice flavor and gives the egg salad a rich yellow hue. According to Medicine Plus which is service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health the following data were compiled.
These uses have been tested in humans or animals. Safety and effectiveness have not always been proven. Some of these conditions are potentially serious, and should be evaluated by a qualified healthcare provider. Uses based on scientific evidenceGrade* Blood clot prevention Early research suggests that turmeric may prevent the formation of blood clots. However, more research is needed before turmeric can be recommended for these conditions. C Cancer Several early animal and laboratory studies report anti-cancer (colon, skin, breast) properties of curcumin. Many mechanisms have been considered, including antioxidant activity, anti-angiogenesis (prevention of new blood vessel growth), and direct effects on cancer cells. Currently it remains unclear if turmeric or curcumin has a role in preventing or treating human cancers. There are several ongoing studies in this area. C Cognitive function Curcumin has been shown to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and to reduce beta-amyloid and plaque burden in lab studies. However, there is currently not enough evidence to suggest the use of curcumin for cognitive performance. C Dyspepsia (heartburn) Turmeric has been traditionally used to treat stomach problems (such as indigestion from a fatty meal). There is preliminary evidence that turmeric may offer some relief from these stomach problems. However, at high doses or with prolonged use, turmeric may actually irritate or upset the stomach. Reliable human research is necessary before a recommendation can be made. C Gallstone prevention/bile flow stimulant It has been said that there are fewer people with gallstones in India, which is sometimes credited to turmeric in the diet. Early studies report that curcumin, a chemical in turmeric, may decrease the occurrence of gallstones. However, reliable human studies are lacking in this area. The use of turmeric may be inadvisable in patients with active gallstones. C High cholesterol Early studies suggest that turmeric may lower levels of low-density lipoprotein ("bad cholesterol") and total cholesterol in the blood. Better human studies are needed before a recommendation can be made. C HIV/AIDS Several laboratory studies suggest that curcumin, a component of turmeric, may have activity against HIV. However, reliable human studies are lacking in this area. C Inflammation Laboratory and animal studies show anti-inflammatory activity of turmeric and its constituent curcumin. Reliable human research is lacking. C Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common functional disorder for which there are limited reliable medical treatments. One study investigated the effects of Curcuma xanthorriza on IBS and found that treatment did not show any therapeutic benefit over placebo. More studies are needed to verify these findings. C Liver protection In traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine, turmeric has been used to tone the liver. Early research suggests that turmeric may have a protective effect on the liver, but more research is needed before any recommendations can be made. C Oral leukoplakia Results from lab and animal studies suggest turmeric may have anticancer effects. Large, well-designed human studies are needed before a recommendation can be made. C Osteoarthritis Turmeric has been used historically to treat rheumatic conditions. Laboratory and animal studies show anti-inflammatory activity of turmeric and its constituent curcumin, which may be beneficial in people with osteoarthritis. Reliable human research is lacking. C Peptic ulcer disease (stomach ulcer) Turmeric has been used historically to treat stomach and duodenal ulcers. However, at high doses or with prolonged use, turmeric may actually further irritate or upset the stomach. Currently, there is not enough human evidence to make a firm recommendation. C Rheumatoid arthritis Turmeric has been used historically to treat rheumatic conditions and based on animal research may reduce inflammation. Reliable human studies are necessary before a recommendation can be made in this area. C Scabies Historically, turmeric has been used on the skin to treat chronic skin ulcers and scabies. It has also been used in combination with the leaves of the herb Azadirachta indica ADR or "neem." More research is necessary before a firm recommendation can be made. C Uveitis (eye inflammation) Laboratory and animal studies show anti-inflammatory activity of turmeric and its constituent curcumin. A poorly designed human study suggests a possible benefit of curcumin in the treatment of uveitis. Reliable human research is necessary before a firm conclusion can be drawn. C Viral infection Evidence suggests that turmeric may help treat viral infections. However, there is not enough human evidence in this area. Well-designed trials are needed to determine if these claims are true. C *Key to grades

They often have not been thoroughly tested in humans, and safety and effectiveness have not always been proven. Some of these conditions are potentially serious, and should be evaluated by a qualified healthcare provider. Abdominal bloating, Alzheimer's disease, antibacterial, antifungal, antimicrobial, antispasmodic, anti-venom, appetite stimulant, asthma, boils, breast milk stimulant, bruises, cataracts, chemoprotective, contraception, cough, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, diarrhea, dizziness, epilepsy, flavoring agent, gas, gonorrhea, heart damage from doxorubicin (Adriamycin®, Doxil®), Helicobacter pylori infection, hepatitis, high blood pressure, histological dye, human papillomavirus (HPV), hypoglycemic agent (blood sugar lowering), infections (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), insect bites, insect repellent, jaundice, kidney disease, kidney stones, leprosy, liver damage from toxins/drugs, male fertility, menstrual pain, menstrual period problems/lack of menstrual period, multidrug resistance, neurodegenerative disorders, pain, parasites, ringworm, scarring, scleroderma, weight reduction. Contraindications: Turmeric should not be used by people with gallstones or bile obstruction. Though turmeric is often used by pregnant women, it is important to consult with a doctor before doing so as turmeric can be a uterine stimulant.
Ginger is a tuber which is consumed whole as a delicacy, medicine or used as spice for cooking or tea. It is the underground stem of the ginger plant, Zingiber officinale. Besides its genus, the plant family to which it belongs--Zingiberaceae--was also named after ginger. Other notable members of this plant family are turmeric, cardamom and galangal. The ginger plant has a long history of cultivation, having originated in Asia and is grown in India, Southeast Asia, West Africa and the Caribbean. It is sometimes called "root ginger" to distinguish it from other things that share the name "ginger".Medicinal uses The medical form of ginger historically was called "Jamaica ginger"; it was classified as a stimulant and carminative, and used frequently for dyspepsia and colic. It was also frequently employed to disguise the taste of medicines. Ginger is on the FDA's 'generally recognized as safe' list, though it does interact with some medications, including warfarin. Ginger is contraindicated in people suffering from gallstones as the herb promotes the release of bile from the gallbladder. Ginger may also decrease joint pain from arthritis, though studies on this have been inconsistent, and may have blood thinning and cholesterol lowering properties that may make it useful for treating heart disease. Diarrhea Ginger compounds are active against a form of diarrhea which is the leading cause of infant death in developing countries. Zingerone is likely to be the active constituent against enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli heat-labile enterotoxin-induced diarrhea. Nausea Ginger has been found effective in multiple studies for treating nausea caused by seasickness, morning sickness and chemotherapy, though ginger was not found superior over a placebo for post-operative nausea. Folk medicinal uses A variety of uses are suggested for ginger. Tea brewed from ginger is a folk remedy for colds. Three to four leaves of Tulsi taken along with a piece of ginger on an empty stomach is an effective cure for congestion, cough and cold. Ginger ale and ginger beer have been recommended as "stomach settlers" for generations in countries where the beverages are made, and ginger water was commonly used to avoid heat cramps in the US. Ginger has also been historically used to treat inflammation, which several scientific studies support, though one arthritis trial showed ginger to be no better than a placebo or ibuprofen for treatment of osteoarthritis. Research on rats suggests that ginger may be useful for treating diabetes. Local uses [Photo] A pack of ginger powder In the West, powdered dried ginger root is made into capsules and sold in pharmacies for medicinal use. In Burma, ginger and a local sweetener made from palm tree juice (Htan nyat) are boiled together and taken to prevent the flu.In China, ginger is included in several traditional preparations. A drink made with sliced ginger cooked in sweetened water or a cola is used as a folk medicine for the common cold.[11]In the Congo, ginger is crushed and mixed with mango tree sap to make tangawisi juice, which is considered a panacea. In India, ginger is applied as a paste to the temples to relieve headache and consumed when suffering from the common cold, people use ginger for making tea, in food etc.In Indonesia, a type of ginger known as Jahe is used as a herbal preparation to reduce fatigue, reducing "winds" in the blood, prevent and cure rheumatism and controlling poor dietary habits. In the Philippines a traditional health drink called "salabat" is made for breakfast by boiling chopped ginger and adding sugar; it is considered good for a sore throat. In the United States, ginger is used to prevent motion and morning sickness. It is recognized as safe by the Food and Drug Administration and is sold as an unregulated dietary supplement. Reactions Allergic reactions to ginger generally result in a rash, and although it's generally recognized as safe, ginger can cause heartburn, bloating, gas, belching and nausea, particularly if taken in powdered form. Unchewed fresh ginger may result in intestinal blockage, and individuals who have had ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease or blocked intestines may react badly to large quantities of fresh ginger. Ginger can also adversely affect individuals with gallstones. There are also suggestions that ginger may affect blood pressure, clotting, and heart rhythms. The following comes from Shirley's Wellness Cafe. Welcome to world of Cayenne Pepper and it's uses.[Photo] Medicinal Use and Health Benefit of Cayenne Pepper (Capsicum)
"If you master only one herb in your life, master cayenne pepper. It is more powerful than any other." Dr. Schulze "In 35 years of practice, and working with the people and teaching, I have never on house calls lost one heart attack patient and the reason is, whenever I go in--if they are still breathing--I pour down them a cup of cayenne tea (a teaspoon of cayenne in a cup of hot water, and within minutes they are up and around)." Folklore from around the world recounts amazing results using cayenne pepper in simple healing and in baffling health problems. But cayenne pepper is not just a healer from ancient history. Recent clinical studies have been conducted on many of the old-time health applications for this miracle herb. Again and again, the therapeutic value of cayenne pepper has been medically validated."Dr. Patrick Quillin The Healing Power of Cayenne Pepper In a recent letter to the editors of the New England Journal of Medicine, three Italian doctors describe how they were able to reduce patients' reported dyspepsia symptoms by more than half - by prescribing red pepper powder. In a study of 30 patients with functional dyspepsia, half of the participants received a placebo, while the other half took 2.5 grams of red pepper powder each day (divided into capsules taken before each of three meals). Both groups took their respective treatments for five weeks, and rated their symptoms each day on a scale of zero to three (higher scores indicated more severe symptoms). By the third week, the red pepper group showed a significant advantage over the control group. And by week five, the pepper group's symptoms had declined 60 percent from their baseline scores - while the control group's scores had only decreased about half as much. The symptom scores included ratings for pain, a feeling of fullness, nausea, and an overall score. The red pepper powder produced significant gains in all four areas. [Photo]Many herbalists believe that Cayenne is the most useful and valuable herb in the herb kingdom, not only for the entire digestive system, but also for the heart and circulatory system. It acts as a catalyst and increases the effectiveness of other herbs when used with them. Cayenne is a medicinal and nutritional herb. It is a very high source of Vitamins A and C, has the complete B complexes, and is very rich in organic calcium and potassium, which is one of the reasons it is good for the heart. Digestion Cayenne can rebuild the tissue in the stomach and the peristaltic action in the intestines. It aids elimination and assimilation, and helps the body to create hydrochloric acid, which is so necessary for good digestion and assimilation, especially of proteins. All this becomes very significant when we realize that the digestive system plays the most important role in mental, emotional and physical health, as it is through the digestive system that the brain, glands, muscles and every other part of the body are fed. Heart Cayenne has been known to stop heart attacks within 30 seconds. For example, when a 90-year-old man in Oregon had a severe heart attack, his daughter was able to get Cayenne extract into his mouth. He was pronounced dead by the medics, but within a few minutes, he regained consciousness. On the way to the hospital, he remained in a semi-conscious state, but the daughter kept giving him the Cayenne extract. By the time they got to the hospital, he had fully recovered and wanted to go home and mow the lawn. The doctor asked what she had given him, as he said it was the closest thing to a miracle he had ever seen. Capsicum (cayenne pepper) is said to be unequal for its ability to boost circulation and increase heart action. Capsicum exerts a variety of desirable actions on the entire cardiovascular system. It has the extraordinary ability to enhance cardiovascular performance while actually lowering blood pressure. Capsicum has an energizing effect on the entire system. It has traditionally been used for overcoming fatigue and restoring stamina and vigor. It is a natural stimulant without the threatening side effects (palpitations, hyper-activity or rise in blood pressure) of most other stimulating agents. Because Capsicum boots peripheral circulation and stimulates organ secretion, it expedites the therapeutic delivery and action of nutrients in the body. It will ensure the rapid and even distribution of the active principles of available nutrients to critical function centers, including those involved in cellular respiration, metabolic data transmission and neural-hormonal action. The remarkable ability of Capsicum to stimulate organ secretion and even heart action makes it one of the strongest natural stimulants known. Clearly, Capsicum should be considered nothing less than a wonder herb that has scientifically proven its worth! Heart Attacks: Cayenne [Photo]If a heart attack should occur, it is suggested that a teaspoon of extract be given every 15 minutes or a teaspoon of Cayenne in a glass of hot water be taken until the crisis has passed. Dr. Anderson also knew of a doctor who rushed out into the parking lot and put cayenne tincture into the mouth of a man who had died of a heart attack while he was parking his car. Within a few minutes, the man’s heart starting beating again. According to Dr. Richard Anderson, using cayenne and hawthorn berries together has a most incredible effect upon the heart. He believes that a regimen of cayenne and hawthorn berries for several months will greatly strengthen the heart, and possibly prevent heart attacks. He states further that if an attack were to occur in someone who had followed this regimen, chances are very good that no damage would occur. He tells the following story about his mother: “I had her taking hawthorn berries and cayenne when she had a heart attack at the age of 79. Her diet had not been the best, and she was in an extremely stressful situation. While in the hospital, they found three blocked arteries and wanted to operate immediately. They did not think that she could survive for more than a few weeks if they didn’t operate. (How many have heard that story!) The doctors thought it would be very risky to operate, but they had her there, and there was a lot of money to be made. So they decided to take some tests in the hopes that they could find an excuse to operate. In spite of the fact that she had been taking lots of aspirin for her arthritis, smoked like she was the reincarnation of a boiler factory, and had just had a heart attack, they found that her heart was incredibly strong. In fact, they felt that her heart was stronger than most people in their 30’s! The good news was that not only did she survive the operation, but also she stopped smoking! Well worth the operation, don’t you think? In my opinion, that was the best thing the doctors ever did for her. Well, that is what hawthorn and cayenne can do for the heart, and every good herbalist knows it; every good doctor should also know it, but very few do.” Emergencies It is a good idea to always have some Cayenne extract on hand for emergencies. Dr. Anderson carries capsules of cayenne with him in the car and whenever he goes hiking, backpacking or mountain climbing. He says, “You never know when you may find someone having a heart attack or some other emergency.” The following stories demonstrate only a few of the remarkable emergency uses of cayenne. If a hemorrhage occurs in the lungs, stomach, uterus or nose, it is suggested that a teaspoon of extract (or a teaspoon of cayenne powder in a cup of hot water) be given every 15 minutes until the crisis has passed. The bleeding should stop in 10-30 seconds. The reason for this is that rather than the blood pressure being centralized, it is equalized by the Cayenne, and the clotting action of the blood becomes more rapid. For external bleeding, take cayenne internally and pour cayenne directly on the wound. Dyspepsia In a double-blind study, 30 individuals with dyspepsia were given either 2.5 grams daily of red pepper powder (divided up and taken prior to meals) or placebo for 5 weeks. By the third week of treatment, individuals taking red pepper were experiencing significant improvements in pain, bloating, and nausea as compared to placebo, and these relative improvement lasted through the end of the study. A placebo-controlled crossover study failed to find benefit, but it only enrolled 11 participants, far too few to have much chance of identifying a treatment effect. All double-blind studies of topical capsaicin (or cayenne) suffer from one drawback: it isn't really possible to hide the burning sensation that occurs during initial use of the treatment. For this reason, such studies probably aren't truly double-blind. It has been suggested that instead of an inactive placebo, researchers should use some other substance (such as camphor) that causes at least mild burning. However, such treatments might also have therapeutic benefits; they have a long history of use for pain as well. Because of these complications, the evidence for topical treatments cited below is less meaningful than it might at first appear. Pain Capsaicin cream is well established as a modestly helpful pain-relieving treatment for post-herpetic neuropathy (the pain that lingers after an attack of shingles) peripheral neuropathy (nerve pain that occurs most commonly as a side effect of diabetes, but may occur with HIV as well as other conditions), nerve pain after cancer surgery and arthritis. Capsaicin instilled into the nose may be helpful for cluster headache. (The fact that this has even been considered a viable treatment option shows how painful cluster headaches can be!) Actual cayenne rather than capsaicin has been tested for pain as well. A 3-week, double-blind trial of 154 individuals with back pain found that cayenne applied topically as a plaster improved pain to a greater extent than placebo. Skin Conditions A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of almost 200 individuals found that use of topical capsaicin can improve itching as well as overall severity of psoriasis. Benefits were also seen in a smaller double-blind study of topical capsaicin for psoriasis. Topical capsaicin is thought to be helpful for various itchy skin conditions, such as prurigo nodularis, but double-blind studies are lacking. Making Tinctures -An Example with Cayenne Tincture - Dr. Schulze Start to make this and ANY Tincture, if possible, on a NEW Moon. Take a Quart Canning Jar and fill it 1/4 FULL with DRIED Cayenne Peppers, getting the HOTTEST ones (i.e. - Habanero, African Bird, Serrano, Jalapeno - 90,000+ Heat Units), that you can obtain. Add enough 50% Grain Alcohol (100 Proof Vodka) to the Cayenne Peppers (powdered, using a Blender or Grinder) to just COVER them. Use enough FRESH Cayenne Peppers, that you can blend with 50% Grain Alcohol (100 Proof Vodka) to turn the Mixture into an Apple Sauce-Like Consistency. Add this Mixture to the 1st Mixture, filling up the Canning Jar 3/4 FULL. Fill up the rest of the Canning Jar with MORE 50% Grain Alcohol (100 Proof Vodka). Shake it as MANY times as possible, during the Day. Let this Mixture SIT, until the following FULL Moon (15-16 Days), but OPTIMALLY until the following NEW Moon (28-29 Days)! Strain this Mixture through an UNBLEACHED Coffee Filter. Bottle the RESULTING Tincture. NOTE: Part EQUALS Volume, NOT Weight in this Tincture Method. If using 95% Alcohol (190 Proof), then DILUTE in half with Distilled Water. Modify this procedure by using DRIED Herbs ONLY, if FRESH Herbs are NOT AVAILABLE, and when making other Herbal Tinctures also. Also if you want to make a SUPER-POTENT Tincture (i.e. - Cayenne Pepper & Lobelia Seed Pod), then allow the Mixture to sit for a FULL 3 Months! Can Cayenne Peppers Really Cure a Headache?
Chronic headache sufferers may soon have some new alternatives. The active ingredient in cayenne peppers, capsaicin, is believed to bring headache relief by depleting Substance P, a neurotransmitter that helps send pain signals. more

Heart Attacks: Cayenne
Dr. Christopher "In 35 years of practice, and working with the people and teaching, I have never on house calls lost one heart attack patient and the reason is, whenever I go in--if they are still breathing--I pour down them a cup of cayenne tea (a teaspoon of cayenne in a cup of hot water, and within minutes they are up and around). This is one of the fastest acting aids we could ever give for the heart, because it feeds that heart immediately. Most hearts are suffering from malnutrition because of processed food we are eating, but here it gets a good powerful dose of real food and it's something that has brought people in time after time. This is something that everyone should know how great it is, because a heart attack can come to your friends or loved ones any time. And even yourself. The warm tea is faster working than tablets, capsules, cold tea, because the warm tea opens up the cell structure--makes it expand and accept the cayenne that much faster, and it goes directly to the heart, through the artery system, and feeds it in powerful food. This book digs up the dirt on the medical establishment saying that heart surgery can nearly kill you and do you no good in the end, all done with a whopping price-tag. Drugs are favored over herbs since they can be patented and sold to patients for great profits. Dick Quinn gives his personal testimony about nearly dying from heart surgery, but finally getting well by taking Cayenne, Garlic, Onion and other herbs, but mainly Cayenne. He scoured the earth looking for the hottest Cayenne he could find to burn his insides out! But no matter how much it burns, it's all good for you. He started his own herb company servicing mainly heart conditions which had a lot of loyal customers until the FDA... shut him down because his cure was effective and cheap, and the medical establishment did not profit. I ran out and bought some Cayenne and popped several daily. I really didn't get the energy boost he got, but I suppose they're helping. The book tells his story first, then describes some herbs secondly, and then ends with the disadvantages of heart surgery. There are sage quotes about the medical establishment and goodness of healing herbs throughout the book from distinguished men. The book seems somewhat disjointed as it goes into its different, but inter-related parts written by different authors. Quinn's story is short, skims the surface, and has some drama, but certainly is not a candidate for an Oscar winning movie. The writing style is direct, conversational, and informative and skips all literary flourishes to get the news out that herbs can heal. I found particularly interesting that drugs like aspirin merely synthetically imitate the healing effects of herbs, such as aspirin being derived from Willow Bark. Dr. John Christopher, famous natural healer, praised the use of Cayenne throughout the time of his practice. He had this to say in his Newsletter titled "Cayenne", Vol 1, Number 12 "In 35 years of practice, and working with the people and teaching, I have never on house calls lost one heart attack patient and the reason is, whenever I go in--if they are still breathing--I pour down them a cup of cayenne tea (a teaspoon of cayenne in a cup of hot water, and within minutes they are up and around). To show the value of cayenne, and how great it is, and what a wonderful heart food it is, this story has been repeated in a number of publications on doctors in the East who put some live heart tissue into a sterile beaker filled with distilled water, and fed it nothing but cayenne pepper, cleaning off sediments periodically and adding nothing but distilled water from natural evaporation. During the time that they were feeding the heart tissue, they would have to trim it continually every few days because it would grow so rapidly. Having no control glands (pituitary and pineal glands), the tissue just continued to grow rapidly and, because of this, they had to watch it over the years and the doctors and associates kept the heart tissue alive for fifteen years. After the doctor died, his associates kept it alive for two more years before destroying it so they could do more research work on it. This shows the high food value cayenne gives to heart tissue. This is why so many, many amazing instances have come to light, people who have used cayenne when they had heart attacks because, in most cases, your heart attack is a case of malnutrition. The heart hasn't had a decent meal for so long that it is practically starved, and we give it immediately a good meal instead of whipping it with nitroglycerine or digitalis or some other type of drug to force it to beat rapidly to bring more food values to the heart so that it could find a little help to keep going. Here we give the cayenne directly to the system, and it goes into the heart area acting as a good full meal. Many fast responses come from this." Historical or traditional use of cayenne The potent, hot fruit of cayenne has been used as medicine for centuries. It was considered helpful for various conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, including stomachaches, cramping pains, and gas. Cayenne was frequently used to treat diseases of the circulatory system. It is still traditionally used in herbal medicine as a circulatory tonic (a substance believed to improve circulation). Rubbed on the skin, cayenne is a traditional, as well as modern, remedy for rheumatic pains and arthritis due to what is termed a counterirritant effect. A counterirritant is something which causes irritation to a tissue to which it is applied, thus distracting from the original irritation (such as joint pain in the case of arthritis). What is the Scientific Evidence for Cayenne? Bibliography Cholesterol Truth - The Dangers of Low Blood Cholesterol and Cholesterol-lowering Medication The idea that too much animal fat and a high cholesterol is dangerous to your heart and vessels is nothing but a myth. Cholesterol is not a deadly poison, [Photo]but a substance vital to the cells of all mammals. Researchers at the University San Diego School of Medicine UCSD point out that high cholesterol in those over 75 years of age is protective, rather than harmful and that low cholesterol is a risk factor for heart arrhythmias (leading cause of death if heart attack occurs). Researchers from the University of Denmark report that about 15% of cholesterol lowering drug users over the age of 50 will suffer from nerve damage as direct result of using statin drugs. USA Today reported that Statins have killed and injured more people than the government has acknowledged. more Obstetrician-gynecologist McGee has been in general practice in Ecuador and China as well as the U.S., and his overseas experience included epidemiology and health statistics in rural areas where people live on simple foods. The title of his book arises from his insistence that more than 80 percent of angiograms and heart bypass surgeries are unnecessary. He also argues that cholesterol isn't as major a factor in provoking heart attacks as it is made out to be, and that advertising and greed are among the main forces driving many drug companies and much of medical practice to say that it is. This isn't the ivory-tower spouting of a fanatic, for, whatever one may think of his satire and sarcasm, some of which is very clever, McGee knows the medical literature and thoroughly documents his points from the contents of reputable journals. He blasts some fresh air through modern medicine and blows away some of its profitable sacred cows. by Alan L. Miller, N.D. The best-known herb for the heart in western herbalism is Hawthorn (Crataegus). The extract of hawthorn can increase blood flow to the heart muscle itself, helping to counteract one of the most common modern causes of death in industrial countries--heart attack due to lack of blood flow to the heart. In pharmacological tests on both animals and humans, hawthorn has been shown to improve the contractility of the heart muscle (which can lead to a stronger pumping action of the heart), increase cardiac performance and output, lower the peripheral vascular resistance (reducing the workload of the heart), steady the heartbeat (antiarrhythmic effect), as well as increasing the heart's tolerance to oxygen deficiency, such as might happen during stress or excitement, or in diseases where the arteries are partially blocked." Transfer Factor Cardio provides comprehensive support for the cardiovascular system. In addition to promoting specific system support with the power of Targeted Transfer Factor, it contains additional ingredients such as magnesium, arginate, red rice yeast extract, B vitamins and antioxidants to help support healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels all necessary for healthy cardiac function. C.K. Benny Foo, M.D. - "My mum is 89 years young and suffers from ischaemic heart disease and congestive cardiac failure. Her main complaints were severe shortness of breath on mild exertion, and coughing. She had to be wheeled around whenever we took her for an outing. I took two bottles of Transfer Factor Cardio home to Australia and started my mum on 2 capsules twice a day. After only three weeks she noticed some improvement in her breathing. After only 5 weeks she said the new capsules we brought back were #1, indicating with her right thumb up. Now she is able to walk further with much less shortness of breath. In mid-October we took her to Werribbee Zoo and brought the wheel chair along for her to use. After a short journey in the wheel chair she decided to walk by herself. We tried to dissuade her and told her that the walk would be too much for her heart. She insisted, and so we relented and let her push the wheelchair around the zoo. She completed the walk around the zoo with no shortness of breath! She has derived other benefits from taking TF Cardio, both her appetite and weight have increased! We are extremely happy TF Cardio has helped her. We strongly recommend TF Cardio for anyone with cardiovascular problems." "In October 2002 I had a C-reactive Protein test (CRP) done to measure the level of inflammation in my artery walls after having read a number of articles indicating this type of inflammation as being the root cause of heart attacks. My CRP reading was 7.9, with 8.7 being about the highest and worst one can have. This test showed I was at very high risk of having a heart attack. One physician I shared this with commented, in front of a large audience, that if my CRP reading stayed at that level, I was virtually guaranteed to have a heart attack. From the day I received my CRP test results, to this day, I have consumed 4 TF Cardio daily. At the end of February, 2003, I had the CRP level checked again. In just four short months of consuming TF Cardio, I am now close to having the BEST level one could have, 1.1. The lowest and best reading on the chart is 1.0! I believe our TF Cardio product most likely saved my life." High Blood Pressure / Hypertension
More Nutrients for the Heart - Cardiovascular System Hypertension, heart disease and strokes are problems that start with the lining of arteries, called the endothelium. When the cell membranes of the endothelium are inflamed, oxidized, toxic and lacking in energy, they go into spasms (blood pressure goes up, and transient lack of circulation in the coronaries is noted, as well as damage to the brain), they become more sticky, and clotting is augmented (cholesterol then sticks to the lining, starting plaque formation, and decreased circulation to the heart and brain). Increased levels of insulin are very inflammatory to the endothelium. Also, higher levels of insulin cause the liver to lose its ability to keep cholesterol from becoming inflamed, and oxidized. A lack of antioxidants in the liver compounds this problem, resulting in toxic levels of cholesterol, which will readily stick to the endothelium, already sticky from the same mechanisms. As you may surmise, FrequenSea begins to correct all the above mechanisms of disease. Specifically, it improves the Nitrous Oxide Synthase (NOS) pathway of inflammation, making the arteries less inflamed and oxidized. A dysfunctional NOS is one of the most important issues behind endothelial inHammaricm. Also, inflammation of the liver and endothelium is increased by toxins such as heavy metals. Any food high in antioxidants in general, and Marine Phytoplankton in particular, will help detoxify these foreign chemicals. Toxins such as Homocysteine are produced by our liver, when it lacks enough B vitamins to carry out its functions, particularly methylation. Homocysteine has been shown to be an inflammatory molecule, and it's practically present in all diseases that have an inflammatory component. Marine Phytoplankton decreases the levels of Homocysteine. By improving the health of our intestinal flora, Marine phytoplankton increases the levels of Short Chain Fatty Acids (SCFA), which are indispensable to the health of cell membranes, particularly the endothelium. SCFA are only produced by benign intestinal organisms. This is why Probiotics have been found to reduce heart disease. The high amino acid content of Marine phytoplankton is also helpful in reducing the risk of heart disease. L-Arginine, an amino acid found in Marine phytoplankton, has been found to be critical to maintain a healthy NOS and endothelium. A lack thereof has been associated with significant inflammation/oxidation of the cell membranes lining arteries. Hugo Rodier M.D. - "There are very few products that provide all, or even most, of the raw materials to make new cells and sustain the existing ones. The problem is that we need ALL of them at the same time for things to work. One of those rare products that contains almost everything you need for life (and the rebuilding of a healthy life) is marine phytoplankton. The Chemistry of Garlic's Health Benefits
Epidemiological and medical studies suggest that individuals regularly consuming garlic show a lower incidence of stomach cancer, have longer blood clotting times and show lower blood lipid levels (which indirectly translates into reduced risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease) Healing properties of Allicin, The Heart of Garlic [Photo]According to the British Journal of Biomedical Science, allicin is considered to be the most potent antibacterial agent in crushed garlic extracts. Garlic has been used since the days of the Egyptians to treat wounds, infections, tumors, and intestinal parasites. Several animal studies published between 1995 and 2005 indicate that allicin may reduce atherosclerosis and fat deposition, normalize the lipoprotein balance, decrease blood pressure, have anti-thrombotic and anti-inflammatory activities, and function as an antioxidant. Garlic has been widely reported to protect against cardiovascular disease by reducing serum cholesterol concentrations and blood pressure and by inhibiting platelet aggregation. Garlic detoxifies chemical carcinogens and prevent carcinogenesis and can also directly inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Allicin, the heart of garlic, stimulates immunity, including macrophage activity, natural killer and killer cells, and LAK cells, and to increase the production of IL-2, TNF, and interferon-gamma. A testimonial by Shirley (author of this website) My husband had a severe heart attack (MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION - an area of tissue death due to blocking off of its blood supply). I credit his full recovery to the following: hawthorn berries (crataegus) extract--- 10 drops twice a day; kyolic (aged garlic), magnesium citrate, ginseng, flaxoil, selenium, zinc, vitamins A and E as well as other multi vitamins; and 2 tablespoons of flaxoil. Medicinal Action and Uses of hawthorn extract
"Medicinal Action and Uses: Mainly used as a cardiac tonic in organic and functional heart troubles." Hawthorn, touted as effective in reducing angina attacks by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels, should never be taken with Lanoxin (digoxin), the medication prescribed for most for heart ailments. The mix can lower your heart rate too much, causing blood to pool, bringing on possible heart failure. Medicine - Herb/Food Interactions

It alleviates inflammation and can break up the deposits that contribute to the pain of arthritis. It clears sinus congestion, conjunctivitis, and spongy, bleeding gums. Because it also has astringent qualities, it can stop bleeding and prevent swelling. A source of Vitamin C, it rejuvenates the entire body when energy is depleted and is such a powerful stimulant that just a few sips of cayenne water or a few grains of cayenne on the lips may help prevent shock or depression in times of physical or emotional trauma. And it is believed to be a good tonic for strengthening the heart. From my studies and my own experience with cayenne, I consider it to be an important ingredient for anybody interested in taking educated and careful responsibility for his or her own well-being in situations that are not serious enough to require a doctor's care or in circumstances in which medical attention is not immediately available. "
Goji (lycium) Berries (Lycium, Barbary Wolfberry) Goji contains cyperone, a sesquiterpene that benefits the heart and blood pressure. Its anthocyanins help to maintain the strength and integrity of coronary arteries. "I've been drinking Goji juice for 6 weeks now. My blood pressure went down from 156/90 to 123/67, I feel stronger, all the congestion on my lungs came out within 2 weeks. My discharge is plentiful and more often, releasing all unnecessary fat/waste. I already stopped taking blood thinner. Goji took care of my irregular heart beat. My body aching went away in 3-1/2 weeks. I eat less food, drink more liquid and sleep good. My wife started 2 weeks after I did and feels stronger and her arthritis is getting better. My daughter followed my wife and her back pain is also going away. Her acne is going away. We continue to drink Goji daily and feel better daily. This is for real. My dosage is 2 oz morning, 2 oz evening; my wife and daughter take 1 oz morning, 1 oz evening. We are a healthy family." Fred C., Guam, U.S.A. "I am a nurse at our Regional Trauma Center. My husband (59 years old) and I (42) started drinking Goji juice in January 2006. My husband is disabled because he suffers from COPD, high blood pPressure, and chronic pain. Since drinking Goji for only 2 1/2 months he has only used his inhalers once. He used to use them at least twice a day. He has had no pain in his back or foot (he broke his foot in 1986). His blood pressure has improved and he has lost weight (20 lbs). I had my knee reconstructed about 13 years ago and was talking to the doctor about getting it injected or having more surgery due to the pain. I have had very little pain since using Goji . I had started having hot flashes and they have just about stopped since the Goji . " Johnny and Sally S., Snow Hill, NC Lower Cholesterol - Goji contains beta-sitosterol, which has been shown to lower cholesterol levels. Its antioxidants keep cholesterol from oxidizing and forming arterial plaques. Depressurize - The effects of Goji’s master molecule polysaccharides on endothelial function were observed by Jia YX et al. (1998) in China. Their results showed that the increase of blood pressure in the hypertensive rats could be prevented significantly by the treatment with Goji polysaccharides. A new cerebroside was isolated from the Goji berry that could protect the liver cells of rats from the toxicity induced by carbon tetrachloride. In a further study, Kim SY et al. (1999) postulated that the Goji cerebrosides may preserve hepatic mitochondrial levels of glutathione by scavenging reactive oxygen species produced and thereby reduce lipid peroxidation and cellular damage. Goji Fights Lipid Peroxidation In Two Ways - The accumulation of lipid peroxides in the blood can lead to cardiovascular disease, heart attack, atherosclerosis, and stroke. Our blood contains the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) to fight against lipid peroxidation, but levels of SOD decrease as we age. In a Ningxia Medical University study, Goji berry consumption was accompanied by a remarkable 40 percent increase in SOD levels, and a decrease in lipid peroxides of an impressive 65 percent. It has been noted that Goji actually contains a unique iron-containing form of SOD. An investigation by Huang Y et al. (1999) in China found that lipid peroxidation was also significantly inhibited by Goji’s flavonoids. Toxins build-up in the body contribute to premature aging and chronic and degenerative diseases. Dr. Steve Nugent, the past president of the American Naturopathic Medical Association, reported recently that "in the typical American home there are more toxins inside the home than outside the home! Your cells actually contain over 400 new toxins that didn't even exist 45 years ago and we are losing the battle against toxins!" It's a fact. There are increasing amounts of toxins and chemical agents in the water we drink, the food we eat and the air we breathe - they all contribute to the breakdown in cellular communication and disease. more The Incredible Healing Powers of Raw (Living) Foods and Juices - The fastest way to restore wellness is to stop putting into the body the things that have caused the physical problem to develop in the first place, and then give the body the nutrients it needs to repair and rebuild itself. The man took some cayenne, which relieved his pain almost immediately. A person known to Dr. Anderson had a severe toothache in the middle of the night on a weekend. He tried many things to relieve the pain. Cayenne was the only thing that helped. [Photo]One of the youngest persons to take cayenne was a six-week old baby who was born with chronic asthma. Dr. John Christopher administered the cayenne using an eyedropper, and it then became possible for the baby to breathe normally. Dr. Christopher has used cayenne to eliminate allergies, varicose veins, cramps, constipation, and to increase energy. Dr. Anderson recommends cayenne to help cleanse the body, increase body heat, improve circulation, and strengthen the eyes. But above all, Dr. Anderson feels that cayenne is exceptionally beneficial for the heart. Rich Anderson published the first Cleanse and Purify Thyself in 1988. Fulvic acid is a humic substance or extract. Humic substances are found in rich humus soil in trace amounts and are considered nature's own best medicine for plants, animals, humans, and the Earth itself. To the science of living cells, fulvic acids are vital in bringing substantial amounts of nutrients and minerals into water solution and delivering their living energies to the living cells. Fulvic acid assists every stage of cellular metabolism and is the most powerful, natural electrolyte known. It restores electrical balance to damaged cells, neutralizes toxins and can eliminate food poisoning within minutes. Shilajit in Sanskrit means "conqueror of mountains and destroyer of weakness". It comes from the rocks in the lower Himalayas and is the most important natural remedy of Ayurvedic medicine. The active principle of shilajit is fulvic acid. Traditionally considered a panacea and a strong kidney tonic, it increases the core energy responsible for your sexual and spiritual power, the same force that is withered by stress and anxiety. “There is hardly any curable disease which cannot be controlled or cured with the aid of Shilajit.” - Famous Indian Vaid Charak (1st Century A.D. It has long been prescribed by traditional health practitioners-including the fathers of Western medicine Hippocrates, Pliny the Elder, and Pythagoras-for its healing properties. Bee pollen rejuvenates the body, stimulates organs and glands, enhances vitality, and brings about a longer life span. Bee pollen's ability to consistently and noticeably increase energy levels makes it a favorite substance among many world class athletes and those interested in sustaining and enhancing quality performance." Steve Schecter N.D. Profound Life-Giving Properties of Marine Phytoplankton [Photo]Dr. Jerry Tennant, MD, from the Tennant Institute of Integrative Medicine, explains that the micronutrients and electrolytes in marine phytoplankton are exactly what human cell membranes need to carry out their metabolism. Not surprisingly, the composition of human plasma, or fluid surrounding cell membranes, is similar to that of sea water. For three billion years Marine Phytoplankton has supported virtually all living creatures in the Ocean. It contains a unique combination of life sustaining nutrients including; Omega 3 essential fatty acids (EPA and DHA), protein, chlorophyll, vitamins, minerals and trace elements. Overdependence on land-based food sources often lead to deficiencies in micronutrients and trace elements. Marine phytoplankton promotes and maintains optimum health by boosting and supporting all systems within the body. When the body is missing critical components, it is unable to maintain the balance of these systems, and malfunctions (disease) result. Scientific research indicates that Marine Phytoplankton may be the most important food on Planet Earth. It is nature's gift to assist us on our journey to optimal health and wellness through balanced nutrition. "The future of Nutrition is found in the ocean" - Jacques Cousteau more Glyconutrients / Glyconutritionals / Saccharides - It's Role in People and Animals' Health and Wellness Glyconutrients are not vitamins, minerals, herbals, homeopathics or enzymes. They are a class all to themselves. They are supplements derived from nature that have been formulated based on a new understanding in biochemistry of how our bodies maintain health at the cellular level. This new discovery is as significant as the discovery of the role of vitamins, essential fatty acids, and amino acids in how the body functions. Glyconutritionals are the foods and nutritional supplements that provide saccharides along with other glycoforms (lipids and proteins) essential to the body, but which are scarce in most diets. Over 20,000 studies have been conducted on individual glyconutrients, and virtually all of them have positive outcomes and show great promise as healers of the future. Based on the knowledge that the body can heal itself through cell to cell communication if given the proper nutrients, glyconutrients are seen by many scientists and doctors as the missing link to optimal health. Healing with Holy Thistle (Blessed Thistle) and Other Herbs The use of blessed thistle commonly known as holy thistle (Carbenia benedicta) has been recorded as far back as the early sixteenth century for treating smallpox, fever, anorexia, dyspepsia, indigestion, constipation, and flatulence. Monks often grew Blessed Thistle as a cure for small pox. Historically, blessed thistle tea has been drunk for digestive problems, liver and gall bladder problems, headache prevention, respiratory ailments, memory improvement and external problems such as sores, boils and itchy skin. The plant gained the title "blessed" for its use in treating plague. Blessed thistle is also used as a strong but gentle liver tonic herb, promoting metabolic activities in the liver cells and toxin elimination. Especially noted as a tonic herb for women. Some individuals employ this herbs, as they would its cousin milk thistle, as a remedy for gallbladder and liver disorders. more Salt Deficiency: the cause of many serious diseases

Garlic, onions, leeks, scallions, shallots and chives are classified as members of the Allium genus. Thus, they are commonly described as Allium vegetables.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF GARLIC? Garlic belongs to the plant genus Allium, and is known for its pungency and spiciness. Garlic is thought, in particular, to be linked to various beneficial health effects, from reducing blood pressure and cholesterol to treating cancer. Garlic may also prossess of antifungal, antibacterial, cardio-protective, antioxidant and anti-cancer activities. In cancer studies, a host of studies provide compelling evidence that garlic and its organic allyl sulfur components are effective inhibitors of the cancer process. Several compounds are involved in garlic's possible anticancer effects. Garlic contains allyl sulfur and other compounds that slow or prevent the growth of tumor cells. [1] However, garlic side effects can be serious including skin irritation and swelling of legs. The main ingredient in garlic was already known and called allicin. google_protectAndRun("ads_core.google_render_ad", google_handleError, google_render_ad); google_protectAndRun("ads_core.google_render_ad", google_handleError, google_render_ad); New Findings in 2008

RESEARCH FINDINGS ON GARLIC BENEFITS

Antioxidant, antihyperglycemic effects and prevention of atherosclerosis?

A few studies have demonstrated that garlic may benefit against atherosclerosis.
El-Demerdash FM et al from Alexandria University, Egypt studied the effects of onion (Allium cepa Linn) and garlic (Allium sativum Linn) juices on biochemical parameters, enzyme activities and lipid peroxidation in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. They administrated alloxan as a single dose (120mg/kgBW) to induce diabetes. They then a dose of 1ml of either onion or garlic juices/100g body weight (equivalent to 0.4g/100gBW) daily to alloxan-diabetic rats for four weeks. They found that the glucose, urea, creatinine and bilirubin levels significantly (p<0.05)>Garlic may have benefits of pulmonary blood pressure lowering, research finds.
Garlic's key ingredient-allicin may prevent primary pulmonary hypertension (a form of high blood pressure) from a study in rats. [4A]

Garlic may prevent cancer.
A host of studies provide compelling evidence that garlic and its organic allyl sulfur components are effective inhibitors of the cancer process. These studies reveal that the benefits of garlic are not limited to a specific species, to a particular tissue, or to a specific carcinogen. Of 37 observational studies in humans using garlic and related allyl sulfur components, 28 studies showed some cancer preventive effect. The evidence is particularly strong for a link between garlic and prevention of prostate and stomach cancers. However, all of the available information comes from observational studies comparing cancer incidence in populations who consume or do not consume garlic (epidemiologic studies), animal models, or observations with cells in culture. These findings have not yet been fully verified by clinical trials in humans. [1-6]

How might garlic prevent cancer?
Several compounds are involved in garlic's possible anticancer effects. Garlic contains allyl sulfur and other compounds that slow or prevent the growth of tumor cells. Allyl sulfur compounds, which occur naturally in garlic and onions, make cells vulnerable to the stress created by products of cell division. Because cancer cells divide very quickly, they generate more stressors than most normal cells. Thus, cancer cells are damaged by the presence of allyl sufur compounds to a much greater extent than normal cells. [1-6]

The chemistry of garlic is complicated. As a result, the quality of garlic products depends on the manufacturing process. Peeling garlic and processing garlic into oil or powder can increase the number and variety of active compounds. Peeling garlic releases an enzyme called allinase and starts a series of chemical reactions that produce diallyl disulfide (DADS). DADS is also formed when raw garlic is cut or crushed. However, if garlic is cooked immediately after peeling, the allinase is inactivated and the cancer-fighting benefit of DADS is lost. Scientists recommend waiting 15 minutes between peeling and cooking garlic to allow the allinase reaction to occur. [1-6]

What are the side effects of garlic?
Although health benefits of garlic are frequently reported, excessive intake can have harmful effects. In a rat study, allicin, the main pungent ingredient in garlic, was found to be an activator of TRPA1. The neurons released neurotransmitters in the spinal cord to generate pain signals and released neuropeptides at the site of sensory nerve activation, resulting in vasodilation as well as inflammation. [2] Other side effects include headache, itching garlic odor on breath and skin, occasional allergic reactions, stomach disorders and diarrhea, decrease in serum protein and calcium levels, association with bronchial asthma, contact dermatitis and complaints of garlic smell [5A]

Garlic preparations vary in concentration and in the number of active compounds they contain. Thus, quality control is an important consideration when foods such as garlic are considered for use as a cancer-fighting agent.

Does garlic have benefits on lipid profiles?
Garlic powder may benefit high triacylglycerol concentration. Turner B et al from Dansk Droge, Ishoj, Denmark also found that there was no significant differences between the garlic and placebo groups in term of total serum cholesterol concentration, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and triacylglycerol concentrations, blood pressure and arterial stiffnessin a 12-week randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. However, they found that garlic powder was associated with a 12% decrease in triacylglycerol concentration. I[6A] Tanamai J et al at Lerdsin Hospital, Thailand also found that there were no significant differences in the total serum cholesterol levels between the group dosed with garlic tablet (enteric-coated) and that dosed with placebo tablet. [5A] This may be also an indication of the importance of the dosage form preparation and study design.

Is garlic antimicrobial?
A lot of people think that garlic can kill germs... But, Fuselli SR et al from Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata, Funes, Argentina have different opinion after they finished their study on the microbial growth of garlic (Allium sativum L.) during storage. They found that Penicillium spp., Monilia spp., Lactobacillus brevis, Leuconostoc mesenteroides subsp. mesenteroides and yeasts grow from garlic. And they found penicillium spp., Monilia spp., Lactobacillus brevis and yeasts from dry garlic. [7A]

Conclusion and comments
Garlic' therapeutic effects have been studied extensively in the last few decades. Garlic may have benefits on certain conditions, such as cancer, however, its preparation and study design have a significant impact on the study outcomes.

The inconsistent results of garlic research may be due, at least in part, to problems standardizing all of the active compounds within garlic preparations. Some of the garlic compounds currently under investigation are: allin (responsible for the typical garlic odor), alline (odorless compound), ajoene (naturally occurring disulfide), diallyl sulfide (DAS), diallyl disulfide (DADS), diallyl trisulfide (DAT), S-allylcysteine (SAC), organosulfur compounds and allyl sulfur compounds.

Flaxseed Oil Information
Flaxseed oil is derived from the hard, tiny seeds of the flax plant. Like fish oil, flaxseed oil contains an omega-3 fatty acid = alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). In addition to alpha-linolenic acid, flaxseed oil also contains omega-6 fatty acids. Both acids are essential to health. A typical dosage of flaxseed oil is 1-2 tablespoons, however, some manufacturers market flaxseed oil in capsules.

What are the health benefits of flaxseed oil?
Flaxseed oil has been shown benefits on lowering heart diseases by reducing cholesterol levels, high blood pressure and slowing down atherosclerosis. Flaxseed oil may also benefit people suffered from bipolar disorder, cancer, acne and rheumatoid arthritis.

What is flaxseed oil good for?
How may flaxseed oil benefit our brain?
Phospholipase A2 hydrolyzes fatty acids from membrane phospholipids: liberated omega-6 PUFAs are metabolized to prostaglandins with a higher inflammatory potential. Intervention trials in human subjects show that omega-3 fatty acids have possible positive effects or benefits in the treatment of various psychiatric disorders. [1] Anyway, more scientific supports are needed for this claim.

How may flaxseed oil benefit people suffered from high cholesterol, heart disease and diabetes?
Alpha-Linolenic acid (Flaxseed oil) significantly decreased hepatic cholesterol but no effect was observed on heart and kidney cholesterol levels. [2]

Alpha-linolenic acid (flaxseed oil) may reduce cardiovascular risk through platelet function and inflammation. [3]

Spray-dried milk formulations supplemented with flaxseed oil are probably effective to decrease the risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease. [4]

Studies in rats suggest that alpha-linolenic acid (flaxseed oil) may be more effective in preventing ventricular fibrillations than eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acid. [5]

Dietary flaxseed oil exerted antiarrhythmic effects during ischemia-reperfusion in rabbit hearts, possibly through shortening of the action potential. [6]

In healthy horses supplemented with flaxseed oil, platelet aggregation was not altered. [7]

However, flaxseed oil did not increase the effect of dietary therapy in correction of glycemia, hypertension and atherogenic lipid levels. [15]

How may flaxseed oil benefit people suffered from cancers?
BREAST CANCER
MICE Mice were injected with human breast cancer cells and fed basal diet. Excisions of tumor were performed, when the tumors reached 110 mm. Flaxseed oil supplementation was found to achieve a greater reduction in lung and total metastases. [10]

In a study of mouse, flaxseed oil combined with melatonin caused a significant decrease in the number and size of tumors. High doses of flaxseed oil could also delay in the growth of mammary cancers. [11]

Supplementation with flaxseed oil for 13 weeks after carcinogen administration was found to reduce established mammary cancer size in rats. [12]

HUMAN In a study of 16 premenopausal women, flaxseed supplementation was observed to significantly increase the urinary 2:16alpha-OHE1 ratio which indicated flaxseed may be chemoprotective in premenopausal women. [13]

COLON CANCER
Flaxseed oil is effective in preventing colon tumor development when compared with dietary corn oil in rats. [14]

LIVER CANCER
The PGE2 concentrations were decreased in livers and tumours of rats fed flaxseed oil. [16]

Spontaneous tumorigenesis in the liver of male C3H/He mice bred for 50 wk was suppressed by being supplied with flaxseed oil. [17]

How may flaxseed oil help renal diseases or injuries?
Flaxseed oil slowed down early fibrosis progression in renal injury of mice. [9] In a study of rats, flaxseed oil feeding produced hepatic and renal enrichments of n-3 PUFA and an increase in C18:>C18 PUFA ratios. The flaxseed oil-based diet was associated with lower mean cystic. Thus, flaxseed oil feeding moderates renal injury and the consumption of flaxseed oil-based products may provide health benefit. [18]

Flaxseed oil may improve bone health and lower risks of UVB induced skin injury.
Dietary level of alpha-linolenic acid (10% flaxseed oil) results in modest improvements in some bone outcomes in a study of mice. [8]

Anti-inflammatory activity of dietary flaxseed oil was demonstrated in UVB-irradiated hairless mice. UVB-induced prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production was significantly lower in rats fed an ALA-rich (flaxseed oil) diet after UVB irradiation. [19]

What are the flaxseed oil side effects?
Up to the date this article is prepared, serious flaxseed oil side effects have not been reported. Flaxseed oil appears to be a safe nutritional supplement when used as recommended. However, people who are at high risk of cancer should not take flaxseed oil, unless they are under physician's advice.

Flaxseed oil is not safe when it is heated for a long time. The heated flaxseed oil side effect include liver enlargement or even liver damage. The fume from heated flaxseed oil may cause cancer. While, high dose flaxseed oil side effects include non-formed feces, depression, anorexia, mild colic, high serum glucose and bilirubin levels. [based on animal studies]. Flaxseed oil side effects, based on research findings are summarized as follows:

Cooking flaxseed oil fumes may increase lung cancer risk. [20]

Horses given large doses of flaxseed oil had nonformed feces by 24 hours after the first administration of flaxseed oil in a study. During or after two weeks flaxseed oil supplementation, some horses also developed depression, anorexia, mild colic, high serum glucose and bilirubin levels. [21]

Flaxseed oil turned to be toxic when it was heated at high temperatures. During gestation and lactation, female rats fed with heated flaxseed oil. Newborn rats found dead and their livers were heavier and higher in lipid content. [22] .

Garlic has long been considered a herbal "wonder drug", with a reputation in folklore for preventing everything from the common cold and flu to the Plague! It has been used extensively in herbal medicine (phytotherapy, sometimes spelt phitotherapy). Raw garlic is used by some to treat the symptoms of acne and there is some evidence that it can assist in managing high cholesterol levels. It can even be effective as a natural mosquito repellent. In general, a stronger tasting clove of garlic has more sulphur content and hence more medicinal value it's likely to have. Some people have suggested that organically grown garlic tends towards a higher sulphur level and hence greater benefit to health. In my experience it certainly tastes better so I buy organic whenever possible whether or not it's best for my health. Some people prefer to take garlic supplements. These pills and capsules have the advantage of avoiding garlic breath. Modern science has shown that garlic is a powerful natural antibiotic, albeit broad-spectrum rather than targeted. The body does not appear to build up resistance to the garlic, so its positive health benefits continue over time. Healthy Antioxidant Studies (2) have shown that garlic - especially aged garlic - can have a powerful antioxidant effect. Antioxidants can help to protect the body against damaging "free radicals". Side-Effects Raw garlic is very strong, so eating too much could produce problems, for example irritation of or even damage to the digestive tract. There are a few people who are allergic to garlic. Symptoms of garlic allergy include skin rash, temperature and headaches. Also, garlic could potentially disrupt anti-coagulants, so it's best avoided before surgery. As with any medicine, always check with your doctor first and tell your doctor if you are using it. Important: Research published in 2001 concluded that garlic supplements "can cause a potentially harmful side effect when combined with a type of medication used to treat HIV/AIDS". More details are available on the NIAID website. See also the warnings page on this site. Medicinal Ingredients of Garlic There are two main medical ingredients which produce the garlic health benefits: allicin and diallyl sulphides. I've given each of these a page of their own: Health Effects of Allicin Health Effects of Diallyl Sulphides Also a page on the chemistry of allicin.
Garlic makes a wonderful health supplement but the garlic cure is no substitute for the basics: sensible eating and appropriate exercise. Garlic should be seen as part of a healthy lifestyle - not as an alternative to it. Always consult your doctor first regarding any medical condition.Animal studies, and some early investigational studies in humans, have suggested possible cardiovascular benefits of garlic. A Czech study found that garlic supplementation reduced accumulation of cholesterol on the vascular walls of animals. Another study had similar results, with garlic supplementation significantly reducing aortic plaque deposits of cholesterol-fed rabbits. Another study showed that supplementation with garlic extract inhibited vascular calcification in human patients with high blood cholesterol. The known vasodilative effect of garlic is possibly caused by catabolism of garlic-derived polysulfides to hydrogen sulfide in red blood cells, a reaction that is dependent on reduced thiols in or on the RBC membrane. Hydrogen sulfide is an endogenous cardioprotective vascular cell-signaling molecule. Although these studies showed protective vascular changes in garlic-fed subjects, a randomized clinical trial funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States and published in the Archives of Internal Medicine in 2007 found that the consumption of garlic in any form did not reduce blood cholesterol levels in patients with moderately high baseline cholesterol levels. Can Cinnamon Help Lower Blood Glucose and Cholesterol? The Effects of Cinnamon in Type 2 Diabetes
There has been a lot of talk these days about cinnamon. According to some studies, cinnamon may improve blood glucose and cholesterol levels in people with Type 2 diabetes. The results of a study from 2003 in Pakistan showed lower levels of fasting glucose, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol after 40 days with levels continuing to drop for 20 days after that. The study was made up of 60 people with Type 2 diabetes who were divided into 6 groups of 10. Three groups received cinnamon in the form of capsules totaling 1, 3 or 6 grams of cinnamon a day. The other three groups received placebo capsules. The capsules were taken three times a day, after meals. All three levels of cinnamon showed results, leading researchers to believe that as little as 1 gram a day of cinnamon may benefit people who have Type 2. There has been some debate in this country on whether "true" cinnamon was used for the study. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), there are two types of cinnamon sold in the United States; cinnamomum zeylanicum nees or cinnamomum cassia (L.) blume. Most of the cinnamon sold in our grocery stores is cinnamomum cassia. The Pakistani study does list cinnamomum cassia as the cinnamon that was used. Richard A. Anderson, Ph.D., CNS, of the the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center (BHNRC), is one of the original researchers in the Pakistan study. The BHNRC is under the United States Department of Agricuture (USDA). From results of his continued study of the components of cinnamon and their effect on blood glucose and cholesterol, he states, "We have also shown that the active components of cinnamon are found in the water-soluble portion of cinnamon and are not present in cinnamon oil, which is largely fat-soluble. In addition to ground cinnamon consumed directly, one can also make a cinnamon tea and let the solids settle to the bottom or use cinnamon sticks, which make for a nice clear tea. Cinnamon can also be added to orange juice, oatmeal, coffee before brewing, salads, meats etc. The active components are not destroyed by heat." Based on these studies, it seems that cinnamon may lower blood glucose, triglycerides and LDL cholesterol in people with Type 2 diabetes. The fact that studies so far have involved a small amount of people and have not yet explored the long term benefits of cinnamon, would lead to the conclusion that there may not be enough evidence gathered yet, to support cinnamon as a major player against Type 2. But adding more cinnamon to already healthy lifestyle changes probably wouldn't hurt either.
