Storm brings tornadoes, dumps heavy rain on Oklahoma, Missouri

Storm brings tornadoes, dumps heavy rain on Oklahoma, Missouri

By Chelsea J. Carter, Greg Bothelo and Sean Morris, CNN
updated 11:07 PM EDT, Fri May 31, 2013
(CNN) -- A storm system that wrought havoc on the Oklahoma City metropolitan area, generating a handful of tornadoes that killed a mother and a child and sent tens of thousands scrambling for shelter, moved late Friday toward Missouri.
The National Weather Service warned a "confirmed and extremely dangerous tornado" was near the city of Harvester, about 25 miles northwest of St. Louis. The tornado was moving east at 50 mph, said Colene McEntee, the St. Charles County Emergency Management coordinator.
As authorities in Missouri urged people to take shelter, officials in Oklahoma were working to determine how many people had been killed and injured in the storm that battered the state's largest city.
A mother and a child were killed as a result of severe weather, and another 14 were injured, said Brooke Cayot of Integris Canadian Valley Hospital in suburban Yukon. Of those being treated at the hospital, three were in critical condition, she said.
At the height of the storm, the National Weather Service issued a tornado emergency for a number of areas in and around Oklahoma's capital city, with tornadoes reported outside Moore, near the suburb of Bethany, north of Union City and outside Tinker Air Force Base.
Parts of Interstates 35 and 40, which cut through Oklahoma City and Moore, were "a parking lot," the weather service said, warning that those caught in the heavy rush hour traffic "are in danger."
"We've got a nightmare situation going on right now," Betsy Randolph, a state Highway Patrol spokeswoman, told CNN.
"They are essentially sitting ducks on the interstate."
Overturned big rigs and cars littered portions of the roadway, and thousands more were believed to be stuck in the traffic.
"My biggest concern right now is the traffic that is out on the highway right now," Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin said.
She said she has called out the National Guard, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and the state Office of Emergency Management to "try to get the traffic moving" and get people to shelter.
The weather service issued the tornado emergency for Oklahoma City as well as its suburbs of Moore, Yukon and Bethany.
Oklahoma City's Will Rogers World Airport was evacuated over the threat from the approaching tornado, and travelers were sheltered in the airport's basement at the height of the storm, authorities said.
"They are now in the process of slowly allowing people out of their shelter. They are bringing employees up now, and then the passengers will be able to come up once the terminal is properly staffed," said Karen Carney, a spokeswoman for the airport.
"Right now, the airport has no power. Without power, they probably will not be able to allow passengers into the secure areas of the airport. But they obviously can't allow any takeoffs and landings without power, either."
Even those in the National Weather Center -- a building on the University of Oklahoma campus with tenants that include the National Severe Storms Laboratory and NOAA's Storm Prediction Center -- "have been urged to stay away from windows due to potential for 80-90 mph winds," according to a tweet from weather service's Norman office, which also is based in the building.
Police and firefighters were responding to reports of damage in El Reno, just outside Union City, but it was not immediately known how bad the damage was, Mayor Matt White said.
Authorities were urging people in the path of the tornado to take immediate cover, and Fallin was urging residents not to take any risks.
In Moore, where a massive tornado leveled much of the city this month, Mayor Glenn Lewis said it was unimaginable that the city was in the path of another tornado.
A reported tornado moved four miles northwest of Moore, according to the National Weather Service forecasters and storm spotters.
The storm was so fierce that the Weather Channel's Mike Bettes, known for his on-the-ground severe weather reports, said his Tornado Hunt vehicle was thrown about 200 yards.
"Airbags deployed. All are safe," Bettes said in a post on Twitter.
More than 50,000 customers were without power by early Friday evening in the Oklahoma City area because of severe weather, the Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co. said.
More than half the city of Mustang, 17 miles south of Oklahoma City, was without power, Mustang Fire Chief Roy Widmann said.

George Zimmerman Defense Fund Shamelessly Asks Public For $5 (DETAILS)

Say What?! George Zimmerman Defense Fund Shamelessly Asks Public For $5 (DETAILS)

Posted 1 hour 48 min ago by Christina Coleman for Global Grind Staff

We're only 12 days away from George Zimmerman's second-degree murder trial and the defense is claiming that they are out of money...again.
According to the defense fund, there is less than $5,000 in the trust account and more than $20,000 in liabilities...which means they won't be properly prepared for trial.
Earlier this year, the defense fund raised $54,000 after announcing that they had run through the $300,000 in donations they received early on.
But what exactly do they need the money for? According to the defense:
In the days ahead, we need to spend thousands of dollars on transcripts of crucial depositions. We need to pay experts and provide them accommodations during the time they may be needed at trial. We’ve contributed all we can, and now we need to ask, hopefully for the last time, for your help.
The defense even goes so far as to tell the public how much they will need...and asks for the smallest of donations. Which, according to them, is $5.00.
We’ve calculated that we need another $120,000 to give George the defense he deserves. At the barest minimum, we need $75,000 to give George a fighting chance. Had we declared indigency, George’s defense would end up costing Florida taxpayers more than $1,000,000. As it stands now, with a little extra support, we’re going to get through trial for less than half that figure, and we’ll have done it, not with tax-payer funds, but with the money generously donated by people from across the country who believe George is innocent and that he is being wrongly prosecuted.
If you believe that George acted properly in self-defense; if you feel he is being wrongly prosecuted; if you feel that George deserves a fair trial, please consider sending one last donation. Even the smallest donations of $5.00 and $10.00 are significant when multiplied by the thousands who contribute.
Who said a fiver was a small donation? That's some gas and maybe a meal at a fast food joint!
We'll continue to keep you updated on the latest developments leading up to the Zimmerman trial on June 10.

Malcolm X's Grandson Reportedly Killed In Mexico

Malcolm X's Grandson Reportedly Killed In Mexico

Malcolm Shabazz, pictured in this 2006 photo posted on his blog, is said to have died Thursday at age 28.
Malcolm Shabazz
Malcolm Shabazz, the grandson of slain civil rights leader Malcolm X, has reportedly died at age 28. A family friend says Shabazz was killed Thursday in Mexico.
The news first appeared in New York's The Amsterdam News, after family friend Terrie Williams tweeted, "I'm confirming, per the U.S. Embassy, on behalf of the family, the tragic death of Malcolm Shabazz, grandson of Malcolm X."
The circumstances of Shabazz's death remain uncertain. Several reports have linked his death to an attempt to rob him, but details about how he died have been varied. It is believed that he was in Mexico City.
Williams, who runs a public relations firm, tells The Journal News that she had known Shabazz for years.
"I mentored him and he did a lot of work with us in terms of speaking to young people," Williams said. "He was a very, very powerful brother."
Shabazz was 12 years old in 1997 when he pleaded guilty to the juvenile equivalent of second-degree manslaughter and second-degree arson after starting a fire in Yonkers, N.Y., that killed his grandmother, Betty Shabazz, Malcolm X's widow.
After his release, Shabazz had more brushes with the law, as he was linked to a robbery and the destruction of property. On his blog, Shabazz wrote that in recent years he had been the target of "harassment from the police/Federal Bureau of Investigation"
The blog says of Shabazz that "since his release from prison a few years ago he has been traveling throughout the U.S. and around the world speaking to different audiences about the struggles that confront this generation."
The News One site reports Shabazz had recently said his Facebook account had been hacked. And a posting on the social media site Tuesday said that "I have some very powerful enemies."
Shabazz was reportedly in Mexico as part of his work with RUMEC, a labor and construction group in California. One of the group's leaders, Miguel Suarez, was deported to Mexico in April.
"He's a supporter of our organization," RUMEC's Juan Ruiz says of Shabazz in an interview withTalking Points Memo. "He went to Mexico to meet with Miguel."
Ruiz says that while he hadn't been in Mexico for the meeting, he had spoken to Suarez, who he says was present when Shabazz was attacked.
"He was murdered," Ruiz tells TPM. "He was in Mexico City and I believe they attempted to rob him and he didn't allow it, so they beat him to death and he died on his way to the hospital."

US civil rights activist Malcolm X (1925-1965) speaks during a rally in Washington, circa 1963. Malcolm X was later assassinated. Malcolm Shabazz, his grandson, was killed Thursday, May 9, in Mexico.

Malcolm Shabazz, grandson of the late civil rights activist Malcolm X, was killed Thursday in Mexico in an apparent beating outside a bar.
Shabazz, 28, had traveled to Mexico to meet with a leader of a California activist and rights group known as Rumec, according to a report in Talking Points Memo, which quoted Juan Ruiz, a member of the organization. The leader, Miguel Suarez, had been deported last month to Mexico by U.S. officials.
Suarez told The Associated Press that Shabazz had traveled to Mexico to support him and his movement. He said he was with Shabazz when Shabazz was beaten up at a bar near Plaza Garibaldi, a downtown square that is home to Mexico City's mariachis.
"We were dancing with the girls and drinking," Suarez said. Then the owner of the bar wanted them to pay a $1,200 bar tab for music, drinks and the women's companionship.
Suarez said a man with a gun took him to a separate room and he heard a violent commotion in the hall. He said he escaped and came back minutes later in a cab to look for Shabazz, whom he found on the ground outside the bar.
"He was in shock. His face was messed up," Suarez told the AP, saying he took Shabazz to a hospital but that his friend died hours later of blunt-force injuries.
Mexico's attorney general's office said a murder investigation was under way, Reuters reported. The office said in a statement that Shabazz "exhibited various injuries, apparently from blows," and died in a hospital.
Al-Hajj Talib Abdur-Rashid, a leading U.S. figure in Islam and the imam of the Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood in Harlem, N.Y., said the Shabazz family was "still trying to find out exactly what happened" and trying to cope with the loss.
He described the Shabazz family as "very private" and said he was respecting its request to be discreet about the death.
"I am a spiritual adviser to the family itself," he said. "They're like any family would be under the circumstances. They're in shock. They're grieving."
He added that details surrounding Malcom Shabazz's death remained sketchy on Friday.
In a statement, the Shabazz family said: "Although his bright light and boundless potential are gone from this life, we are grateful that he now rests in peace in the arms of his grandparents and the safety of God. We will miss him."
Numerous attempts to reach other Mexican officials were unsuccessful. Friday was Mother's Day in the country, and most official offices were closed, including U.S. consular bureaus and the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City. The State Department would say only that a U.S. citizen had been killed in Mexico City and that it was withholding further comment at the family's request.
Shabazz had a turbulent childhood and adolescence. His mother, Qubilah Shabazz, was indicted on charges of plotting to kill the Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, who some suspected was involved in Malcolm X's assassination. Qubilah Shabazz was Malcolm X's second daughter.
In light of his mother's legal and personal troubles, Shabazz was placed at a young age in the custody of Betty Shabazz, his grandmother and Malcolm X's widow. On June 1, 1997, Shabazz, then 12, set a fire in his grandmother's Yonkers, N.Y., apartment that left the woman critically injured. She died later that month from those injuries.
Shabazz pleaded guilty to setting the blaze and was sentenced to 18 months in juvenile detention for manslaughter and arson. That sentence could be re-evaluated every year until he turned 18.
He got out after four years, but two years later, at age 18, he landed in prison on a charge of attempted robbery.
Months after his release in 2006, Shabazz was arrested again after punching a hole in the window of a doughnut shop.
Imam Dawud Walid, an acquaintance of Shabazz and executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Michigan, said the Malcolm Shabazz he knew was a young man struggling with the pressure of being the grandson of a famous civil rights warrior.
"I had spoken with him in the past pertaining to the struggles that he had and some of the mistakes that he made in the past as a youth," Walid said. "He spoke of the pressure and the scrutiny that he was under coming from being part of the Shabazz family. It's a lot for a young man to handle — also, a lot to live up to. There are a lot of people who expected him to be the reflection of his grandfather, and that's a heavy burden to bear."
He also said that even though he knew of Shabazz's past criminal troubles, he did not see a dark side in the man.
"He had a very mild disposition and was a person who smiled constantly," Walid said. "That's my interactions with him."

Mister Cee ARRESTED For Soliciting A MALE PROSTITUTE...AGAIN!

 photo MRCEE_zpsd0ef1485.jpg

The problem is not so much that he is gay, but his denial of the obvious!

Hot 97's Mister Cee ARRESTED For Soliciting A MALE PROSTITUTE...AGAIN!

Some folks never learn.  Hot 97's legendary (in more ways than one) DJ Mister Cee is back up to his old tricks again.  And by tricks, we mean prostitutes!
Deets inside on his latest arrest for soliciting yet another male prostitute....

It's like April 2011 all over again.  For the second time in 2 years, DJ Mister Cee was arrested for soliciting a male prostitute.

Several reports say that police have confirmed Cee--government name Calvin LeBrun--was cuffed after he allegedly tried to pick up a prostitute on a Brooklyn street corner.

According to the NY Daily News, Calvin had no clue that the gigolo he allegedly approached on the corner of Madison St. & Broadway around midnight Friday...was actually an undercover cop.  FAIL.

Calvin has been officially charged with "patronizing a prostitute" and is still waiting to be arraigned today.

If you'll recall, back in April 2011, Cee was arrested after he was found engaged in oral sex with a male prostitute in Manhattan.  He plead guilty to that offense, yet stayed oddly mum about the fact the prostitute was male.  He also said the whole arrest was a conspiracy by NYPD.  Alrighty then.

It was also uncovered at that time that Cee was arrested a few times previous to that for other lewd & prostitution acts, unbeknownst to the public.

Quiet as kept, this dude also has a wife, allegedly.

Sometimes it's easier to just be who you REALLY are and find you a boo you actually want.  In this case, possibly one of the male persuasion.  Then you wouldn't have to turn to prostitutes to get your rocks off.

NEWS: MISTER CEE BREAKS SILENCE ON PROSTITUTE BUSTS, REVEALS HIS SEXUALITY

MONDAY, MAY 6, 2013 10:40AM
Written by Cyrus Langhorne
Hot 97 radio veteran Mister Cee came through on a weekend promise made by the station today (May 6) by coming forward to speak on his bust last week on a prostitution charge and revealing his sexuality.
Cee appeared on Monday's "Cipha Sounds & Rosenberg" morning show to set the record straight.
"I am not gay," Cee told his co-workers Peter Rosenberg, Cipha Sounds, Ebro, and K Foxx this morning on Hot 97. "I was approached by a female undercover cop." Cee went on to say that the original story reported by the New York Daily News cited that the cop was a women, but at some point the news reports changed to say the arresting officer was a man. When Ebro and Rosenberg pointed out that the area where Cee was arrested in is known for the solicitation of transgender prostitutes Cee said it was just "dumb luck" that he was in that site at the time. Cee admitted that he does regularly engage in soliciting female prostitutes and paying strippers for sex, but reinforced that he does not seek out men or transvestites. (AHH)
While Cee denied having any interest in same-sex relationships, he did admit an addiction to prostitution.
"I have an addiction to not only prostitution. I have an addiction to getting the quickie," said Cee. Throughout the interview Cee was asked constant questions about his sexuality and consistently maintained that while he is big supporter of the gay community he himself is not a homosexual. "People have accused me of being gay for probably ten years now," said Cee. "I don't care what people think." (AHH)
Reports of Cee's latest run-in with New York police hit the Internet Saturday (May 4).
Popular Hot 97 deejay "Mister Cee" was busted trying to pick up a male prostitute in Brooklyn, cop sources said. But Cee, 46, whose real name is Calvin LeBrun, didn't know that the gigolo he approached at Madison St. and Broadway in Bushwick just before midnight on Thursday was really an undercover cop, the sources said. (New York Daily News)
Back in June 2011, Cee pleaded guilty to a prostitution charge.
Cee, 44, whose real name is Calvin LeBrun, pleaded guilty to a charge of loitering for the purpose of engaging in a prostitution offense. He and his much younger companion, Lawrence Campbell, 20, were busted March 30 at 4 a.m. at Watts and West streets. He was ordered to complete three months, or 12 sessions, of counseling with a doctor, officials said. (New York Daily News)

This is the DJ’s third time being arrested on prostitution related charges in the last three years. He was arrested in March 2011 after police observed him getting fellatio from a male prostitute in a parked car. Despite his colleague Funkmaster Flex decreeing his innocence, Cee pled guilty to a charge of loitering for the purpose of engaging in a prostitution offense in June the same year. He was ordered complete three months, or 12 sessions, of counseling with a doctor. According to the New York Daily News, Cee was busted on the same charge on October 8, 2010 in Lower Manhattan. Regenerate Your Teeth

Regenerate Your Teeth by Cathy Bilsky

Yes, this is possible and the information has been out there for over 50 years.  Secrets, secrets, secrets.  Why is this not being talked about..at all?  Bottom line…. Their just isn’t enough money in helping people regenerate their teeth for dentist to share this knowledge.  All the money is in restoration and dentures. Are you surprised?

I will be your short cut and I encourage you all to do more reading on regenerating your teeth. This will give you a good start on thinking that this is even possible. Answers are simple..man makes them complex. So I have tried to make it as simple as I can.

So we are to embark on what is called cutting edge dentistry science.

Regenerating your teeth …Basic 101

What happens in your mouth depends on the high concentration of calcium and phosphorus ions that is in your salvia and blood. If you have a decent diet you have a high concentration of these calcium and phosphorus ions in your salvia. If your diet is not good, you’re going to have a lower concentration of them. Diet is very important.

                                 BACETERIA

Bacteria causes decay. There are 3 or 4 main decay producing types of bacteria, the two primar y ones are the strep-mutanes, which are the big ones and then after that comes lacto-bacillus.  These bacteria, the 3 or 4 main types which attack our teeth do it by producing toxic waste products in the form of acids that literally eats holes in the tooth enamel. If you want to stop this process, the first thing you have to do is get rid of the infection.

You may also have “molaritis” or “bicuspidate” which is an infection in your tooth. Dentist just refer to these things as cavities to be filled. If you’re a dentist every cavity looks like a filling, NOT A HEALING, but a filling.

To heal your teeth you need to REMINERALIZE your cavities. Your cavities are either getting bigger or smaller depending on the availability of calcium and phosphorus ions from our saliva. Now, if the deposits are coming back onto the tooth structure about as fast as they are leaving, then your teeth stay healthy. If the reverse is true, then a hole starts to develop. If you have a hole in the tooth, it’s nothing more than soft tooth structure, earlier it had more calcium and phosphorus in it.

If you would like to speed up the remineralization of your teeth there is a product on the market called BIOTENE..Oral balance dry mouth moisturizer available at  any pharmacy. They have a tooth paste, however, it does have fluoride in it. For those of you who do not know how poisonous fluoride is that it is used in rat poison. Hitler gave fluoride to the Jews in the concentration camps to make them docile. It effects the front part of your brain that gives you the will to resist. Also called the couch potato syndrome where you have no energy or will to do anything. Nasty stuff. And it is also put it in our drinking water….hummmmm

You may want to make your own toothpaste.

Good ole baking soda is proven to be a good anti-microbial. Remember to brush your tongue. Why do a great job on your teeth only to have them come in immediate contact with the microbes living on the surface of your tongue.

BACK TO REMINERALIZING YOUR TEETH.    Herbal remedies. Echinacea is a great oral antibacterial. Cover your entire gum line with Echinacea tincture before bedtime and leave it on over nite. Chamomile tea is useful against gingivitis because it reduces inflammation and kills germs. Infuse 2 teaspoons of the herb in a cup of water that has reached a boil and steep for 5 to 10 minutes. Drink a cup after meals. Coenzyme Q10 is a naturally occurring molecule that’s essential for tissue health. A deficiency of coenzyme Q10 has been linked to periodontal disease, and research has shown that is accelerates the healing and repair of periodontal tissue. Q10 capsules can be found at any health food store.

When you have a dry condition in your mouth because your salivary glands are not working correctly any dentist will tell you that the roots of the teeth, the root surfaces, the gum areas that protect the roots, deteriorate at an extremely rapid rate. As you use the Biotene products you are adding a very high concentration of the calcium and phosphate ions in your mouth and you are actually helping to heal these areas that have softened up. “Your salvia contains these same ions on it’s own and if your teeth are perfectly clean and your mouth is in biologic balance, you do not need this product.”

GUM AND NECK TOOTH PROBLEMS

So we now need to focus on the little space down between the neck of the tooth and the tooth itself.  For all practical purposes, lets call it the neck of the tooth disease. This is the area of the biggest amount of problem, and it seldom gets cleaned properly because food and bacteria collects in this space, on the outside of the t ooth and on the tongue side, and we don’t really clean there very well. Flossing doesn’t usually reach these pockets. If you have a dental problem, or any amount of disease or any amount of dental recession, then it is highly  advisable that you use some form of irrigation to clean around the neck of the tooth. Go buy a water pic for they remove a lot of debris from your mouth, especially with tips to flush out those “pockets”                                                                   (page 2) Pockets are nothing more than the same little space we started off earlier which was normal, and which has now gotten deeper and this is called a periodontal pocket. It’s nothing more than a space between the tooth and the gum, and the deeper they get, the more food and the more bacteria pack down in there. The deeper it gets, the more it ru ins the attaching fibers.                                                                                     (page 3)

With a little effort you can enjoy a state of biologic balance in your mouth. You can grow new bone and it grows it right back up the tooth again.

Hydrogen peroxide used in your water – pic  2 to 3 times a day is great for killing bacteria.

Sugar, alcohol and caffeine must go. With these things in the diet, it’s impossible to get the blood elements in balance. Stress can cause gingivitis.

Vitamin  C and vitamin E and maybe A and some D should be added to the diet for balance. For people with stress taking vitamin B complex, C and E will help. Eat a high protein diet, low carbohydrates and wonderful things will happen with your teeth. Usually people who have periodontal disease has what is called a periodontal profile. They are low in Zinc, iron, copper, potassium, magnesium and manganese. Mineral deficiency. It helps to have a sufficient calcium in one’s system so that the saliva contains a fair amount of calcium for teeth.

9 Vital tips for Keeping Your Teeth Healthy for Life   By Tom Cornwell

1. Brush regularly and soon after eating as possible– even after snacking. 2. Select a good toothpaste and stick to it.  Plain ole baking soda will clean your teeth, a great anti-microbial and posses no risk to you. 3. Brush your tongue or use a tongue scraper. 4.Floss at least once a day. 5. Learn how to irrigate the teeth and gums and do it daily. Oral irrigation serves several purposes; it helps remove food particles trapped below the gum line, using the right anti-microbial fluid in your irrigator can help remove the “biofilm” which harbors bacteria dangerous to your oral health and irrigating massages the gums resulting in increased circulation. VERY  IMPORTANT TO DO.  ( You may want to by a large plastic bib for this is really messy.) 6. Irrigate deep pockets with a cannula tip and a good ant microbial solution. This measure is one of the best things an individual can do, on his or her own, to assist in stopping decay where pockets have formed between the tooth and gum. Select an irrigator which can accommodate the tiny cannula tips. Not all do. When irrigating a deep pocket, the cannula tip is small enough to deliv er the ant microbial solution deep ( hydrogen peroxide, apple cider vinegar) where the regular irrigator tip cannot reach. (ask your dentist, if you have one, for help with this.) 7.Nutrition is half the battle. A demineralization and demineralization process is taking place constantly as the teeth are being bathed in healing saliva. The body is equipped to care for itself as long as conditions are right, and as everything else in the body requires good nutrition the teeth and gums are no exception. Staying away from sugars is fine, but don’t forget carbohydrates; cakes, breads, chips.  Vitamin C has long been known as important for healthy gums and a good collidal  mineral supplement will provide the calcium and phosphorus your teeth need. Your strong autoimmune system is one of your best defenses against poor oral health and GOOD food is your best source of vitamins and minerals. 8. White teeth do not necessarily mean healthy teeth. While tooth whiteners remove staining, to some degree, they do not necessarily do the cleaning job required by your other efforts. 9. Choose your dentist wisely.  Pick one that you can ask about ‘periodontal anti-infect ive therapy’ involving home irrigation and ant microbial solutions.  Again, this is cutting edge science and a little effort on your part might keep you away from the “specialist”.

Coconut oil is an edible oil extracted from the kernel or meat of matured coconuts harvested from the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). Throughout the tropical world, it has provided the primary source of fat in the diets of millions of people for generations. It has various applications in food, medicine, and industry. Because of its stability, it is slow to oxidize and, thus, resistant to rancidity, lasting up to two years owing to the highsaturated fat content.[1]
Many health organizations advise against the consumption of high amounts of coconut oil due to its high levels of saturated fat.

Dry process

Coconut oil can be extracted through "dry" or "wet" processing. Dry processing requires the meat to be extracted from the shell and dried using fire, sunlight, or kilns to create copra.[2] The copra is pressed or dissolved with solvents, producing the coconut oil and a high-protein, high-fiber mash. The mash is of poor quality for human consumption and is instead fed to ruminants; there is no process to extract protein from the mash. The preparation and storage of copra often occurs in unhygienic conditions, yielding poor quality oil that requires refining. A portion of the oil extracted from copra is lost to the process of extraction.

The all-wet process uses raw coconut rather than dried copra, and the protein in the coconut creates an emulsion of oil and water.[3] The more problematic step is breaking up the emulsion to recover the oil. This used to be done by prolonged boiling, but this produces a discolored oil and is not economical; modern techniques use centrifuges and pre-treatments including cold, heat, acids, salts, enzymeselectrolysis, shock waves, or some combination of them. Despite numerous variations and technologies, wet processing is less viable than dry processing due to a 10-15% lower yield, even compared to the losses due to spoilage and pests with dry processing. Wet processes also require investment of equipment and energy, incurring high capital and operating costs.[4]
Proper harvesting of the coconut (the age of a coconut can be 2 to 20 months when picked) makes a significant difference in the efficacy of the oil-making process. Copra made from immature nuts is more difficult to work with and produces an inferior product with lower yields.[5] Conventional coconut oil uses hexane as a solvent to extract up to 10% more oil than just using rotary millsand expellers. The oil is then refined to remove certain free fatty acids, in order to reduce susceptibility to rancidification. Other processes to increase shelf life include using copra with a moisture content below 6%, keeping the moisture content of the oil below 0.2%, heating the oil to 130–150 °C (266–302 °F) and adding salt or citric acid.[6] Virgin coconut oil (VCO) can be produced from fresh coconut meat, milk or residue. Producing it from the fresh meat involves removing the shell and washing, then either wet-milling or drying the residue and using a screw press to extract the oil. VCO can also be extracted from fresh meat by grating and drying it to a moisture content of 10-12%, then using a manual press to extract the oil. Producing it from coconut milk involves grating the coconut and mixing it with water, then squeezing out the oil. The milk can also be fermented for 36–48 hours, the oil removed, and the cream heated to remove any remaining oil. A third option involves using a centrifuge to separate the oil from the other liquids. Coconut oil can also be extracted from the dry residue left over from the production of coconut milk.[6]
A thousand mature coconuts weighing approximately 1,440 kilograms (3,200 lb) yields around 170 kilograms (370 lb) of copra from which around 70 litres (15 imp gal) of coconut oil can be extracted.[7]

RBD

RBD stands for "refined, bleached, and deodorized." RBD oil is usually made from copra (dried coconut kernel).
The dried copra is placed in a hydraulic press with added heat and the oil is extracted. This yields up practically all the oil present, amounting to more than 60% of the dry weight of the coconut.[8]
This "crude" coconut oil is not suitable for consumption because it contains contaminants and must be refined with further heating and filtering.
Another method for extraction of a "high-quality" coconut oil involves the enzymatic action of alpha-amylase, polygalacturonases, and proteases on diluted coconut paste.[9]
Unlike virgin coconut oil, refined coconut oil has no coconut taste or aroma. RBD oil is used for home cooking, commercial food processing, and cosmetic, industrial, and pharmaceutical purposes.

Hydrogenation

RBD coconut oil can be processed further into partially or fully hydrogenated oil to increase its melting point. Since virgin and RBD coconut oils melt at 24 °C (76 °F), foods containing coconut oil tend to melt in warm climates. A higher melting point is desirable in these warm climates, so the oil is hydrogenated. The melting point of hydrogenated coconut oil is 36–40 °C (97–104 °F).
In the process of hydrogenation, unsaturated fats (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids) are combined with hydrogen in a catalytic process to make them more saturated. Coconut oil contains only 6% monounsaturated and 2% polyunsaturated fatty acids. In the partial hydrogenation process, some of these are transformed into trans fatty acids

Fractionation

Fractionated coconut oil is a fraction of the whole oil, in which the different medium-chain fatty acids are separated for specific uses. Lauric acid, a 12-carbon chain fatty acid, is often removed because of its high value for industrial and medical purposes.[10] The fractionation of coconut oil may be used to make caprylic/capric triglyceride oil.[11] Medium-chain triglycerides like caprylic/capric triglyceride oil are most frequently used for medical applications, special diets and cosmetics, sometimes also being used as a carrier oil for fragrances.

Figures

The United States Department of Agriculture has published estimated production figures for coconut oil as follows; tabulated years are from October 1 through September 30:[12]

Coconut oil makes up around 2.5% of world vegetable oil production.

Standards

The World Health Organization's Codex Alimentarius guidelines on food, food production and food safety, published by the Food and Agriculture Organization, includes standards for commercial partners who produce coconut oil for human consumption.[13] The Asian and Pacific Coconut Community (APCC), whose 17 members produce about 90% of the coconut sold commercially,[14]has published its standards for virgin coconut oil (virgin coconut oil is obtained from fresh, mature coconut kernels through means which do not "lead to alteration of the oil").[15]

Health

Many health organizations advise against the consumption of high amounts of coconut oil due to its high levels of saturated fat, including the United StatesFood and Drug Administration,[22] World Health Organization,[23] International College of Nutrition,[24] the United States Department of Health and Human Services,[25] American Dietetic Association,[26] American Heart Association,[27] British National Health Service,[28] and Dietitians of Canada.[26][dead link]
Coconut oil contains a large proportion of lauric acid—a saturated fat that raises blood cholesterol levels by increasing the amount of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol.[29] It is also found in significant amounts in laurel oil, palm kernel oil (not to be confused with palm oil), human and animal breast milk and sebaceous gland secretions.[30][31] This may create a more favourable blood cholesterol profile, though it is unclear if coconut oil may promote atherosclerosis through other pathways.[29] Because much of the saturated fat of coconut oil is in the form of lauric acid, coconut oil may be a better alternative to partially hydrogenated vegetable oil when solid fats are required.[32] In addition, virgin coconut oil is composed mainly of medium-chain triglycerides,[33] which may not carry the same risks as other saturated fats.[32][34] [35]
Advocacy against coconut and palm oils in the 1970s and 80s due to their perceived danger as a saturated fat caused companies to instead substitutetrans fats, unaware of their health-damaging effects.[36]
A repellent made from coconut oil can be used to prevent tungiasis-causing sand fleas from invading the body.[37]

In food

Coconut oil is commonly used in cooking, especially for frying and is a common flavor in many South Asian curries. In recent years, virgin coconut oil has become increasingly popular in natural food circles and with vegans. It was described in a New York Times article as having a "haunting, nutty," flavor that also has a touch of sweetness, which works well in baked goods, pastries, and sautés.[38] Coconut oil is used by movie theatre chains to pop popcorn, adding a large amount of saturated fat in the process.[39] Coconut oil (along with laurel oil and palm kernel oil) contains a large proportion of lauric acid, which is converted to monolaurin in the body, a fat found otherwise only in breast milk.[30] Lauric acid is destroyed by some oil processing methods.
Other culinary uses include replacing solid fats produced through hydrogenation in baked and confectionery goods.[32] Hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated coconut oil is often used in non-dairy creamers, and snack foods including popcorn. Hydrogenated coconut oil is also sold in Australia under the brand-name Copha and is the main ingredient in Australian snacks such as Chocolate crackles and White Christmas.
The smoke point of coconut oil is 177 °C (351 °F).[18]

Industry

Coconut oil has been tested for use as a feedstock for biodiesel to be used as a diesel engine fuel. In this manner, it can be applied to power generators and transport using diesel engines. Since straight coconut oil has a high gelling temperature (22–25 °C), a high viscosity, and a minimum combustion chamber temperature of 500 °C (932 °F) (to avoid polymerization of the fuel), coconut oil is typically transesterified to make biodiesel. Use of B100 (100% biodiesel) is possible only in temperate climates, as the gel point is approximately 10 °C (50 °F). The oil must meet the Weihenstephan standard[40][better source needed] for pure vegetable oil used as a fuel, otherwise moderate to severe damage from carbonisation and clogging will occur in an unmodified engine.
The PhilippinesVanuatuSamoa, and several other tropical island countries are using coconut oil as an alternative fuel source to run automobiles, trucks, and buses, and to power generators.[41][better source needed] Coconut oil is currently used as a fuel for transport in the Philippines.[42] Further research into the oil's potential as a fuel for electricity generation is being carried out in the islands of the Pacific, though to date it appears it is not useful as a fuel source due to the cost of labour and supply constraints.[43]
Coconut oil has been tested for use as an engine lubricant[44] and a transformer oil.[45]
Acids derived from coconut oil can be used as herbicides.[46]
Coconut oil (and derivatives, such as coconut fatty acid) are used as raw materials in the manufacture of surfactants such as cocamidopropyl betainecocamide MEA and cocamide DEA.

Personal uses

Coconut oil can be used as a skin moisturizer, helping with dry skin[47] and reduces protein loss when used in hair.[48] Coconut oil can also be used as sexual lubricant, although it can damage latex condoms.[49]
Before the advent of electrical lighting, coconut oil was the primary oil used for illumination in India and was exported as cochin oil.[50]
Coconut oil is an important base ingredient for the manufacture of soap. Soap made with coconut oil tends to be hard, although it retains more water than those made with other oils and therefore increases manufacturer yields. It is more soluble in hard water and salt water than other soaps allowing it to lather more easily.[51] A basic coconut oil soap is clear when melted and a bright white when hardened.[52]
