NEW YORK (WABC) -- Firefighters are battling a smoky four-alarm fire in the Bronx after a garage burst into flames early Thursday.
The garage caught fire on East 226th Street in the Wakefield section around 6:25 a.m., spewing a large column of smoke that was visible from more than 20 miles away.
Heavy flames shot out of the garage, and firefighters unsuccessfully battled to keep the fire from spreading to an adjacent commercial building.
They reportedly had trouble gaining access to the area, but as of now, the fire appears contained to the private garage.
At least two cars were also engulfed.
Service on the Nos. 2 and 5 subway lines have been suspended between 241st Street and Gun Hill Road due to the FDNY activity.
