CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts -- A campus police officer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was shot Thursday night, the campus police chief told WCVB in Boston.
Massachusetts State Police told the station the officer's injuries are life-threatening.
The incident happened at about 10:30 p.m. Eastern Time near Building 32 (Stata), the TV station reported.
MIT alerted the campus to an active shooter at 10:48 p.m., and is warning everyone to stay away from the building.

An MIT police officer was shot late Thursday evening, the police chief confirmed to NewsCenter 5's Kimberly Bookman.
The shooting happened around 10:30 pm near Building 32 (Stata), which is currently surrounded by responding agencies. The area is cordoned off.

Massachusetts State Police say the officer has suffered 'life-threatening injuries.'
According to Massachusetts State Police, the victim is a male. "He has suffered life-threatening injuries," State Police said.
State Police said they were assisting in the search for a suspect or suspects, processing the crime scene, and providing investigative support.
According to the University's website, "Responding agencies continue to investigate active shooter incident at building 32 (Stata). Please stay indoors and away from Building 32 (Stata) and surrounding area."
